Desmond William Carrier was born in Tod Inlet Village, now part of Gowland-Tod Provincial Park, on August 3, 1925 and was raised in Brentwood Bay on Tod Inlet, where his father was manager of the Tod Inlet Cement Plant, owned by the Butchart family.
