Advanced Technology Keeps Things Natural at Moorecroft Regional Park

JEA has been working with the Regional District of Nanaimo and The Nature Conservancy of Canada to define protected areas of natural habitat in Moorecroft Regional Park in Nanoose.

“The intent is to keep the balance of it natural. The challenge is to be environmentally sensitive and minimize disruption to vegetation because it is now a regional park,” says surveyor Ken Kyler, who worked on the original 2001 survey before coming to JEA.

In this first phase, completed in early November, JEA converted the original 2001 topographical survey to an AutoCAD Data File. Doing so brought it into the UTM Datum (Universal Transverse Mercator) method of mapping and ensured that it would be on the exact same datum as regional district mapping. The second component, which involves surveying covenant areas to define which parts of the park will be allowed improvements, was to be completed in December, 2011.
